Description: In the spring of each year an outstanding scientist is given the Distinguished Scientist Award. That individual is then asked to present a campus wide lecture the following Fall. This year this lecture was presented by Dr. Thomas Ficht, professor of veterinary pathobiology, on November 2. The lecture was a brilliant presentation entitled: Brucella: From Crusaders to Cowboys. This lecture was extremely successful with a standing room only crowd.

Description: This symposium has become a recognized annual event at TAMU. It grows in popularity every year attracting excellent speakers and attendees. This year’s theme was Science and Engineering for Sustainable Development. Professor Winston Soboyejo from Princeton University was the featured speaker. Dr. Soboyejo has an active research program on the fatigue and fracture of advanced intermetallics and composites. Dr. Soboyejo worked as a research scientist at the McDonnell Douglas Research Labs, St. Louis, Missouri, on the development of high temperature intermetallics and composites for hypersonic vehicles, and the development of state-of-the-art structural life prediction methodologies. Dr. Soboyejo has authored over seventy papers, presented three invited papers and was selected in 1991 as one of Missouri's 25 most distinguished scientists. He was also the recipient of Young Investigator Awards from The National Science Foundation and Office of Naval Research in 1994.

Description: Each year the Texas A&M University Chapter conducts an induction ceremony for new members and presents awards for outstanding public school science teachers, science communicators, and a distinguished scientist. This year the Banquet was held on March 31, following the annual symposium. Following the induction of 14 new members awards were presented to: Distinguished Scientist - Dr. J. N. Reddy; Outstanding Science Communitator - Mr. Jim Hiney; Outstanding High School Science Teacher - Mr. Chris Ormiston; Outstanding Middle School Science Teacher - Ms. Jane Scallon; and Outstanding Elementary School Science Teacher - Mr. David Cain. Patricia Galloway was our featured speaker. Patricia Galloway is Chair of the Board and CEO of The Nielsen-Wurster Group. Ms. Galloway was also inducted as the first woman president (2003-2004) of the American Society of Civil Engineers. She is an internationally recognized leader in civil engineering and has also helped lead the society's globalization initiative by serving as the chair of the ASCE International Committee as well as serving on the ASCE as its international director from 1992-1995.

This committee is comprised of the Associate Deans for Research in
those colleges that have members in Sigma Xi. We have been incredibly
successful in obtaining Sigma Xi awards in the past few years due in
part to the enthusiasm of the committee members.We are proud to report
in 2005 the following talented individuals were selected for Sigma XI
Awards - Thomas E. Spencer (Young Investigator Award), Bjarne
Stroustrup ( William Proctor Prize) and Al Cotton (Monie Ferst Award).
Members of the committee are not necessarily members of Sigma Xi but
are able to see the value of the Sigma Xi organization.

This committee was formed in an attempt to centralize educational

Description:
The TAMU chapter of Sigma XI co-sponsors an essay and drawing contest
each year for middle school students. This years contest was held in
conjunction with Dr. David Woodcock's lecture entitled: The
Architectural Investigation of Historic Resources. Each contestant was
asked to create a drawing of differant types of houses or historical
buildings in their community and a drawing of a home of the future
(2050). The essay portion was to be regarding how low-cost homes for
large numbers of people in other States and in other parts of the world
compare.
Five winners were presented with $75.00 certificates.
