Description: The symposium has become a recognized annual event at Texas A&M University. It grows in popularity every year attracting excellent speakers and attendees. This year's theme was Environmental Disruptors: Epigenetics and Genome Cell Signaling Processes. Dr. Michael K. Skinner, Professor, School of Molecular Biosciences; Director - Center for Reproductive Biology; Director - Center for Integrated Biotechnology at Washington State University was the featured speaker. Dr. Skinner's research is focused on the investigation of how different cell types in a tissue interact and communicate to regulate cellular growth and differentiation with emphasis in the area of reproductive biology. Recent studies have elucidated several critical events in the initiation of male sex differentiation, testis development and ovarian primordial follicle development. His current research has demonstrated the ability of endocrine disruptors to promote transgenerational epigenetic disease phenotypes due to abnormal germ line programming in gonadal development. Dr. Skinner has over 180 peer reviewed publications and has given over 100 invited symposia, plenary lectures and university seminars. Dr. Skinner has been the director of the Washington State University and University of Idaho Center for Reproductive Biology (CRB) since its inception in 1996. In addition to his administrative duties, Dr. Skinner remains actively involved in research and participates in several program grants with the CRB. Other speakers from Texas A&M were Stephen Safe, Tom Spencer, Tim Philips and Edward Dougherty. The Symposium was orgnanized by Drs. Philip Mirkes and Fuller Bazer who also served as co-chairs. Also, the Symposium was held in conjunction with Student Research Week.
